Do you have The 1% Mentality?

Out of the 8 million kids who play High School basketball every year, only about 1% go on to play at the Division 1 level.  If you want to achieve what only a few are able to; you have to do what only a few are committed to doing.  I have come to call this the 1% mentality.

I can walk into most gyms and find kids chucking up shots from the 3pt line or from half court.  There is always one kid that’s in the corner by themself, working on their handles or shooting off the backboard.  That one kid has the 1% mentality; their improving their game.

Players with the 1% mentality consistently work hard on their game, so they can rise to any occasion.

I also know players who will spend all day on social media, instead of working on their game.  When they get into a game, they blow easy lay-ups or miss open shots.  Players with the 1% mentality consistently work hard on their game, so they can rise to any occasion.

The 1% mentality is the drive that separates talented NBA players from legends.  In 2002 at Magic Johnson’s Hall of Fame induction Larry Bird said,
“He made me work harder knowing that we’d be linked throughout our careers.”

Players like Michael Jordan, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, all have the 1% mentality.
